The Last Member Of The Sumner Team Passes

A great friend and Alamo Scout, Harry D. Weiland passed away on August 21, at the age of 89. Harry graduated from the third class at the Alamo Scouts Training Center at Finschafen, Dutch New Guinea on June 22, 1944, and was Assigned to Sumner Team. Harry spent 125 days conducting harrowing missions behind enemy lines in New Guinea and on its offshore islands; on Leyte and Luzon in the Philippines, and on occupation duty in Japan. Harry was proud of his service and lifelong association with Alamo Scouts, and the families and friends of the ASHF.

The ASHF Has A New Secretary

Linda Nellist, daughter-in-law of Alamo Scout Bill Nellist was appointed to the ASHF’s board of directors as secretary at the annual board meeting during the Alamo Scouts reunion in Albuquerque, New Mexico on August 2, 2014. Linda brings talent, expertise and energy to the table. We are very fortunate to have Linda on our team as we continue to strengthen and move forward. Kathi Henderson resigned her position on July 31st after three years as secretary.

The Passing Of Jerry Littlefield

"The entire ASHF community is saddened by the death of our friend, Jerry Littlefield, son of Alamo Scout Wilbur Littlefield, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Jerry's infectious wit, unbridled optimism, and love of family and friends uplifted all who knew him and exemplified the best in all of us. Our deepest condolences to his wife, Laurie, and to the entire Littlefield family. We shall miss him dearly."

Team Leader's Grandnephew Promoted To Major

Noel Sioson, grandnephew of Alamo Scout team leader Rafael Ileto and a member of the Alamo Scouts Historical Foundation, recently was promoted to major in the U.S. Army. Noel graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and serves with Army Special Forces in Washington State. Currently Noel is attending the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Congratulations to Noel and his family.

The Passing Of The General

Retired MG Robert L. Shirkey, Alamo Scout Team Leader, died peacefully in his sleepRobert L. Shirkey on February 14, 2014 at the age of 89 in Kansas City, Missouri. Robert was a 7th class graduate of the ASTC, led six (6) missions on Luzon, Philippines. Robert retired from the Army as a Major General. Hosted the first Alamo Scouts reunion in 1980, and a second one in 2005 where the late Robert Sumner was honored. READ OBIT

Alamo Scout William Watson (94), back home

Received an update on Alamo Scout William Watson. His grandson reports that following some health issues, the 94-year-old original member of REYNOLDS Team (Class 2), is back home doing well. After his team disbanded, Watson (then an enlisted man) served on several other teams and later earned a battlefield commission in early 1945. After hearing nothing of or from "Bill" for three years, we are elated to learn that he's doing well.

Family Members of Scouts Pass Away

The Alamo Scouts community is saddened to report the passing of Willard J. "Bill" Boes (age 65), son of Alamo Scout William Boes (BARNES Team), on October 26; and of Julie Dove (age 94), wife of Alamo Scout team leader John Dove, on October 29th. Bill was a frequent attendee at the ASA reunions and was a strong supporter of the ASHF.  Bill's obituary may be viewed online HEREAlthough Julie never attended a reunion, she took a strong interest in the Alamo Scouts and relished her extended family very much. According to daughter Patti Frisk, Julie "died peacefully, laughing with and enjoying my brother Michael and his family." The ASHF extends its condolences to the families of Bill and Julie.

In his latest work, he masterfully weaves the myriad nuts and bolts of 23 selected WWII spec ops missions. Gone From Us, Alamo Scout Robert "Bob" Buschur

Beloved Alamo Scout Robert "Bob" Buschur passed away on October 22, at the age of 89. Bob graduated from the third class at the Alamo Scouts Training Center at Finschafen, Dutch New Guinea on June 22, 1944, and returned to the 40th Infantry Division, where he served with distinction for the rest of the war. In civilian life, Bob and his family owned and operated one of the largest and most successful dairy farms in Ohio. Bob will be remembered by those who knew him as a true gentleman--a kind and caring man who valued family, friends and country. The ASHF wishes to convey its sympathies to wife, Rita, and to the entire Buschur family. READ OBIT

The ASHF Secures Hotel For The 2014 Reunion In Albuquerque, NM

Hotel contract is signed and set for the 2014 reunion in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dates are set from July 31st thru August 3rd. Sheila Hard will be hosting this reunion. Sheila is the daughter of the late Alamo Scout, Harold Hard, a Rounsaville team member that participated on the Cabanatuan raid. More information to come as the reunion details unfold.
